The Student Recreation Center thundered Friday night as hundreds of fraternity and sorority members arrived to show their support for their respective organizations in a vivacious two-hour dance competition.

The competition was a close one, but Pi Beta Phi and Phi Kappa Psi were the winners. Gamma Phi Beta and Pi Kappa Alpha came in close second, while Kappa Kappa Gamma, Alpha Epsilon Pi and Delta Tau Delta came in third.

"We were happy and surprised when we found out we won the event," said third-year mechanical engineering major Zoltan Novak. "We practiced all we could, and did our very best in the competition."

Novak also notes this was the first time he actually won the Greek Pyramid.

"I did this last year too, and we placed second," he said.

The event was structured to place a fraternity alongside a sorority to work in unison and choreograph one dance routine. The combinations were chosen randomly through a straw hat, so that organizations could socialize with one another.

"We got assigned to work with Pi Kappa Alpha, and we thought they were outstanding partners," said second-year psychology major Mireen Manalac and member of Gamma Phi Beta. "We got really close to all of them, and when it came to the dance competition, we had a lot of fun."

This was Manalac's first time participating in this event.

"Last year, before I joined Gamma Phi Beta, I attended this dance competition as an audience member. I saw how much fun they were having, and how much spirit they were showing, so I decided to try it out too," she said.

The enthusiasm of the performers and audience combined to create a concert-like atmosphere, where Greek organizations had the opportunity to meet new people.

Second-year English major Jason Zhang was an attendee, and said he enjoyed the show. "It was pretty good. Lots of people came to see their fraternities and sororities and everyone was cheering and happy," he said. "The dances were awesome too-very well choreographed."

In the front row sat a panel of six judges who watched the performers with diligence and concentration.

Student Development Educator and Director of WELL Jennifer Miller was one of those judges.

"They were very enthusiastic and worked very hard for today," Miller said about the winning fraternity and sorority. "My favorite part was seeing the dancers come out because they're excited and scared at the same time, but willing to try something new. It was really well choreographed and they held a fantastic performance."

A similar sentiment was shared by a fellow judge Assistant Dean of Students Tonantzin Oseguera.

"They did a great job getting it all organized and getting people to come," Oseguera said about the event organizers. "My favorite part was the cheering. There were probably around 900 people in attendance cheering and screaming for all the fraternities and sororities out there."

The dance competition was a conclusion to a week-long event celebrating Greek life.
