Regents approve 32 percent fee increase

The Regents approved a 32 percent undergraduate fee increase amidst protests late this morning at the meeting at UCLA. The only regent to vote against the increase was student regent Jesse Bernal.

The recommendation proposes that undergraduate student fees be raised by $585 for the rest of the academic year. The proposal also suggests a $1,344 addition by next fall, a move which brings the total UC tuition for in-state students to $10,302. In an open session earlier today the Regents sat in while students, union members, faculty and staff presented their case to the Regents and Yudof. Many were angry, outraged at the way the Regents have chosen to deal with the state's financial shortfall.

A total of 14 protestors have been arrested this morning after refusing to be quiet.

Around the state a number of students are protesting the changes proposed by the Regents.

Students at UC Riverside have started a teach-in at Hinderacker and the Student Life building today.

Protests will continue at UCLA until Thursday.
