Kronos Quartet sends strings and notes flying

Lauded musicians explore the value of beauty, art in song
"I've always wanted the string quartet to be vital, and energetic, and alive, and cool, and not to be afraid to kickass and be absolutely beautiful and ugly if it has to be." These are the words of David Harrington, founder and first violinist of the world renowned Kronos Quartet, words expressive of a musical philosophy which, over the course of 30 odd years, has influenced the way that contemporary art music is both heard and experienced.… 1 Comment

Respecting the planet through theater

Students bring attention to the destruction of nature and eradication of indigineous peoples
Respecting the planet through theater
Chicano Student Programs hosted Noche de Teatro Thursday evening in Watkins 1000. The performance was co-sponsored by Teatro Quinto Sol, the Center for Ideas & Society, and the Associated Students Program Board. It featured the dramatic, bilingual piece "El Ultimo," created by Oregon group Teatro Milagro, which left the audience wondering about humans' attitude toward nature and indigenous people.… 1 Comment

Tracy Lee Nelson & The Native Blues Band
Fall quarter's last Nooner featured Tracy Lee Nelson and the Native Blues Band, hailing from the La Jolla Indian reservation in San Diego. The event was hosted by the Native American Student Association. "We wanted to give people an awareness of traditional music, but also of contemporary genres," said William Madrigal, the chairman of the Native American Association and fourth-year anthropology and Native American studies major.… Post the First Comment

Movie Review: The Twilight Saga - New Moon

Movie Review: The Twilight Saga - New Moon
As she stumbles, panting, through thick underbrush at the beginning of "New Moon," Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) comes face to face with that which she fears most. No, she doesn't encounter a villainous monster (series author Stephenie Meyer has defanged or declawed most of these); instead, she sees herself grow old.… Post the First Comment

Movie Review: The Blind Side

Movie Review: The Blind Side
"The Blind Side" tells the true story of NFL star Michael Oher, played by Quinton Aaron, and his route to success after he is taken in by the kindly Tuohy family, who seem to be different from him in every way.  From one point of view, "The Blind Side" can border on being an "Uncle Tom's Cabin" part two and contains of all the standard ingredients to be so.… Post the First Comment

Movie Review: Boondock Saints II - All Saints Day

Movie Review: Boondock Saints II - All Saints Day
Two Irish guys, thinking they're on a mission from God, run around Boston killing all the mobsters and perverts running rampant in the city. Sounds like a good plot, right? Too bad that was the plot of the first "Boondock Saints." Its sequel, "Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day," has a much weaker plot that focuses less on the killing, and more on delving into the past of the guys' father, Poppa MacManus.… Post the First Comment

Movie Review: Planet 51

Movie Review: Planet 51
Take a suburban town of nose-less, green aliens, gloss it over with a retro-futuristic coat of varnish-and what do you get? A lackluster reel of film, the premise of which has been done time and time again. Even still, TriStar Pictures has attempted to breathe new life into this done-to-death genre with "Planet 51.… Post the First Comment

CD Review: Battle Studies by John Mayer

The sweet singer of the blues and king of the guitar John Mayer has finally released his newest album "Battle Studies," an album which contains tracks that interweave the blues and alternative rock, making music that is entirely Mayer's own. Always the brilliant lyricist, Mayer ensures that his words are as soulful as the way he croons them.… Post the First Comment

CD Review: Before I Self Destruct by 50 Cent

50 Cent's new album, "Before I Self Destruct," borders on sounding like two different musical projects. The first half of 50's fourth studio release is aggressive and violent until it suddenly moves into a smoother R&B influenced second half, with appearances by Ne-Yo and R.… Post the First Comment
