The UC Riverside men’s golf team was back on the course this past Monday and Tuesday, taking part in the UC Riverside Winter Intercollegiate after not being in action for the past couple of months due to the winter intermission.

Junior Sam Gillis picked up right where he left off, shooting a two-day total of 224 (+8) which was good enough to give him a tie for third place overall. The Highlanders’ A squad ended up coming in fifth place, behind other Big West conference teams UC Irvine, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Santa Barbara who ended up winning the event, while the Highlander’s B squad ended up tying for seventh.

Coming behind Gillis for the Highlanders was Andrew Spillman, who had a two-day total of 230 (+14). Fellow Highlanders rounded out the score sheet as follows: Matt Lutz 237 (+21), Brandon Tsujimoto 239 (+23) and Anthony Bonales 241 (+25).

The event’s champion, UCSB not only took away the overall title but boast while also having the top-two medal winners in the field. Brandon Bauman and Zach Smith shot 216 (E) and 218 (+2) respectively and ultimately helped their team gain the UC Riverside Winter Intercollegiate title.

The UC Riverside men’s golf team will be back in action next week, when they travel down to San Diego to compete in the Farmers Intercollegiate on Feb. 8 and 9.
