Sports.womenstennisUC Riverside women’s tennis suffered a loss in their conference match against Cal State Fullerton with a final score of 0-7. The loss was a setback after last week’s win against Whittier College, which they won 8-1.

Entering the match, the Highlanders’ 2-4 record paled in comparison to the Titans’ record of 7-1. Fullerton also had a six-match winning streak under their belt.

In doubles competition, the women played hard, but failed to win a single match. Sophomores Karlay Dulay and Tamila Vaksman battled Fullerton co-captains Alexis Valenzuela and Camille de Leon in an intense match that ended with a score of 6-3, but the team maintained a positive demeanor, in part due to cheers from their teammates and the onlookers.

The Highlanders proved to be more competitive in singles play, especially during a spirited match between sophomore Chloe Pham and  Valenzuela. While Pham fell 6-3, 6-1 to Valenzuela, she made the victory a hard-fought one as she consistently forced rallies.

UC Riverside currently sits at 3-6 on the season with their next match coming Friday, March 4 against the 3-5 University of Toledo Rockets at the UCR Student Recreation Center.
