As you might know, the University of California, Riverside (UCR) didn’t start off as a university at all! It was originally built as a citrus experiment station, where scientists and researchers looked at countless aspects of agriculture pertaining to citrus trees. Now known as Anderson Hall, a building you may have passed when attending lectures in the School of Business, the citrus lab has become famous in the citrus world.
The station was founded in 1907, however it is not the building we see today. Originally, the laboratory was placed on Mount Rubidoux but was later moved to Big Springs and served as the foundation for the construction of our UCR campus. 1954 was the year that UCR first opened its doors to students. The citrus experiment station lives on through Anderson Hall and the thousands of citrus trees that surround and spruce up our campus.
