Volleyball falls to Cal Poly Mustangs and UCSB in eighth straight loss

UCR’s volleyball team (5-14, 1-7) played against Cal Poly San Luis Obisbo (14-6, 7-1) on Thursday, Oct. 26 in their eighth conference game of the season. The 3-0 loss is the most recent in the team’s seven-game losing streak. 

The Mustangs took an early lead, winning the first two sets 25-16 and 25-13 respectively. Although the Highlanders started the third set strong to claim an initial lead, they ultimately fell 25-20. 

Cal Poly’s performance improved their already strong record. While the Highlanders put up 29 kills, 32 points, one ace and two blocks with 14 total errors, the Mustangs secured their win with 42 kills, 53 points, seven aces and four blocks only committing nine errors. 

Freshman outside hitter Amarachi Osuji and junior opposite hitter Alexiz Vanlandingham led the team in scoring, both claiming 10 kills. Senior libero Renta Bath and senior setter Morgan Kline contributed team highs as well. Bath finished the match with seven digs, and Kline finished with 15 assists. 

The Highlanders also battled UC Santa Barbara in an attempt to win their second conference game of the season on Saturday, Oct 26. Riverside suffered their eighth straight loss against the Gauchos, failing to win a set for the eighth straight game.

UCR’s volleyball team will travel to Long Beach on Friday, Nov. 1 to take on The Beach (7-13, 3-4).
