Highlanders. It’s happened. Halloween is on a Saturday. You know what that means: Halloweekend! Back-to-back parties from Friday to Sunday. Endless events and dress-up fun! Except … it’s the thick of midterm season. There’s no way we can indulge in the festivities when we have to study for that giant midterm on Wednesday.

Not to fear! There is still a way to have fun and keep your academic weapon status. After all, we shouldn’t have to sacrifice experiences just to ensure our futures. Follow me! As a veteran of attending Halloween events during midterm season, I’ll make sure you are able to maximize your fun.

First! The pregame is now studying. Yup, you heard me right. If we’re going to maximize our academic potential while still having fun, we need to make sure that we lay the groundwork. This miniature lock-in session will ensure that you don’t have to wake up early or lock in more after you party. You may think, “Wait, won’t I just forget everything after attending the event?” No. We’re going to ensure that there is enough time between the function and your studying pregame that you’ll still be able to remember what you did after a long night.

Second! Make sure you eat and hydrate. It is easy to get caught up in the festivities, indulging in the fun without thinking about how you’ll feel after. However, if you forget to drink water before and after the festivities, you won’t be coherent enough to begin studying again. Eating food and drinking water will guarantee that you have the energy to power through another study session before the next function.

Third! Allow yourself to rest. This weekend is going to feel really stressful. If you forget to section out time and plan breaks, allowing for transition between studying and fun, you’ll start to feel like you’re losing track of way too much time. This will cause you to panic, overcompensating and sacrificing the college experience. The transitionary period makes sure that you compartmentalize what you need to get done away from the experiences that bring you joy.

Now, if you are really just too stressed out and the idea of doing any kind of partying or festive hangout is one second away from throwing you into a panic attack, it is okay to not go. I know it’ll suck to miss out on festivities, but there will always be another year, another event. Prioritize what’s important to you and stick to it. This guide is simply for those who want to do both but don’t even know where to begin.

Happy Halloween, Highlanders. With this guide you will conquer the hangover gods and do well on any midterm you have coming up.
