A writer, a scientist, a philosopher, a mathematician, a musician, a poet, a researcher and an artist walk into a coffee shop. They order coffee, and next thing you know … they sit down and talk to each other. You may have been waiting for the punchline, but there isn’t one here. The fact is, these sorts of meetups...
For many people, the thought of using a restroom in public doesn’t cause much consternation. There may be a few germaphobes among us who cannot stand the idea of a public restroom, but when push comes to shove, the public restroom is the default option for the emergency scenario.
For many, this act that seems so simple isn’t quite so...

Editorial: Playing the game to beat it: UCR’s battle to change public prestige
The Editorial Board -
What is it, exactly, that makes a college, in the eyes of the public and students, prestigious? Most of us know the name of a prestigious university when we hear it. Its name often rings in the public sphere, whether for its athletics or for professors’ or students’ achievements, with big, grand-sounding names for awards. Sometimes it’s just the...
October second. It looms. It’s hanging there like an unwanted relative staying at your house too long, reminding you why you don’t live with them in the first place. It’s that annoying dog that won’t stop barking and saying, “Look! I’m here! Look! Look!” And unfortunately, it’s your pleasant neighborhood reminder that no matter how long you try to...
Dear UCR students,
First off, congratulations on finishing that last final. It was brutal, wasn’t it? Trust us, we know exactly how you felt. Or, if you’re a new, incoming student spending your orientation learning about your new college, congratulations on surviving high school. Whether it’s the last days of your high school years or the last final exam (for...
It was a moving sight to see.
Over a thousand students, stretched from the Bell Tower to nearly Olmsted Hall, all holding candles, gathered to celebrate the lives prematurely taken from our sister school at UC Santa Barbara. With so many flickering candles lighting a crowd of solemn faces, hardly a dry eye could be seen as the UCR community...
A large, magnificent sight appears in downtown Riverside that the city’s citizens and UCR students have wanted for so long: Thousands of people are flowing into the city, the streets are bustling and life is moving. All this — thanks to the city’s brand-new $50 million-plus arena.
At first glance, it seems almost too good to be true. Students have...
Dear ASUCR,
We at the Highlander would like to give our congratulations to our newly elected ASUCR representatives on their hard-earned victories this year. The campaign was long and sometimes negative, but each of you soldiered through the slime and debris to earn the trust of the student body and represent us to UCR, the UC and the Riverside community....
UCLA has faced some criticism recently for its diversity. A viral video created by UCLA student Sy Stokes last November protested the lack of diversity at the campus, where only 4 percent of undergraduates are black. Twenty-four percent of respondents at UCLA indicated that they experienced “exclusionary” conduct.
Virtually everyone agrees that these numbers can and should be improved. But...
By now, every student has heard the critiques before. We’re lazy. We’re entitled. We don’t want to take our eyes off our Facebooks or our butts off our couches. Yeah, we know.
UCR students have shattered that misconception.
The last few weeks have been a frenzy of activity. Most notably, ASUCR held its annual elections, during which students posted record turnout...
