Parts of University Ave. were shut down Wednesday, March 13 following shootings at a nearby apartment complex and on the I-215 offramp.

Around 7:20 p.m., Daniel John Jones, a 44-year-old Hispanic male of Chino Hills shot two individuals at the apartment complex located at 5310 Canyon Crest Dr.

According to a press release from the Riverside Police Department, Jones was visiting an acquaintance at the apartment complex. For reasons unknown, Jones entered one of the victim’s apartment and shot him. Jones then went to a landing between the apartment buildings and shot the second victim. According to the press release, there were no apparent reasons for the two separate shootings. Jones then fled from the crime scene on his white Toyota.

The two victims were taken to a nearby hospital. One of the victims, James Weatherby of Riverside, was pronouced dead from the wounds. The other victim was released from the hospital.

Later that night, Jones was involved in a minor traffic collision and pulled over on the I-215 offramp near University Ave. A bystander offered to help Jones, but fled after Jones pulled out two handguns and pointed them at the subject. The subject was not harmed.

Moments later, a second person pulled over to assist Jones. As the second subject exited the vehicle, Jones fired one of his handguns and struck the subject’s windshield. The subject fled and Jones fired an additional round at the subject. He managed to escape unharmed.

The California Highway Patrol and Riverside Police Department responded to incident and arrested Jones on the scene. Parts of University Ave. were closed as investigators search the crime scene for evidence. According to reports, the street was closed until 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Jones was arrested on one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder. The names of the other victims that were shot at by Jones have not yet been released.
