The 41st-annual Writers Week was carried out from Feb. 12 to Feb. 17, bringing a total of 20 writers to the UCR campus to read from their selected works and address questions. From UCR faculty, alumni and internationally recognized artists spanning several generations, the voices heard throughout the event resonated with audiences young and old.

To describe the experience of being at a Riverside Underground Performance Organization (RUPO) open mic night would be to describe inhabiting a tight knit, welcoming community of enthusiastic artists. For a $3 cover fee (donated to support local aspiring artists and homeless people), anyone can venture down into the basement of downtown Riverside’s Back to the Grind Coffeehouse —...
Shuri is a lot like most younger siblings: Her most defining feature is her spunk — she’s unwilling (or perhaps unable) to engage in conversation with her older brother without throwing in a joke at his expense — but give her a bit of time and the wisdom and compassion come through. “Just because something works,” she tells him...
“Black Panther’”s official soundtrack was released through Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope records and executively produced by Kendrick Lamar and Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith. My initial reaction when the tracklist released was pretty reserved, with artists like Travis Scott and Swae Lee drawing my disinterest. But, there also were plenty of exciting artists such as Vince...
You meet Joan Didion when you are ready. You have probably seen her name on lists of greatest writers or “Writers You Should Read” listicles. I met Didion at a party, in conversation where this girl gashed my conversation about Audre Lorde for Didion. It left a permanent disdain of Didion; who was she and why did her importance...
“Peter Rabbit” is the second live-action film of 2018 about a British anthropomorphic animal in a blue jacket based on a series of children’s books — the other being “Paddington 2.” I haven’t seen “Paddington 2,” but I have seen “Peter Rabbit,” and it is easily my pick for best live-action film about a British anthropomorphic animal in a...
February is the shortest month of the year, full of love, flowers and heart-shaped balloons, not to mention saccharine Instagram and Twitter videos of flamboyant gifts as Valentine’s Day lands right in the middle of the month. Some people look forward to this day to show their significant others love, appreciation and (of course) the meticulous and personally curated...
Pomona nightclub 340 is the kind of club you’d see in a movie. The facade of the building is polished in a dark blue with windows covered by curtains obscuring its neon rays. This time around, its absence of grime and smut drew suspicion about the night’s promise of fun. It is a Wednesday night, and assumed students and other...
UC Riverside will be hosting its 41st annual Writers Week this week, from Monday, Feb. 12 to Saturday, Feb. 17. Writers Week is the longest-running free literary event in all of California and is comprised of readings, question-and-answers and presentations from 20 authors from around the world. This year’s notables include Maxine Hong Kingston, National Medal of Arts recipient...
There’s something uniquely satisfying about films, especially in the horror genre, that market themselves as “inspired” by true events. What does that even mean? It’s become common knowledge at this point that some of the genre’s most beloved entries that adopted this marketing ploy stretched the definition of inspiration one mile too far: A tragic shooting-turned ghost story became...
